Communities thrive on engaged users. What better way to convert your customers into super users than by rewarding and motivating them? Here are some tips on how to use the ranks panel in Control.

Trick 1: VIP room access

Exclusivity is a powerful motivator. You can both reward your super users and motivate to the rest of the community if you introduce a “private members club”, which only your super users can see. Key to this will be a rank that’s very difficult to reach. This rank should be highly visible, for example by using a gold star icon. Receivers can be given a custom role, which in turn will reveal your hidden subforum. Now, your super users will have their very own VIP room.

Trick 2: Personal development coach

Community members will, over time, change motivations and develop increased levels of knowledge. You can speed up their learning curve by aligning member development with 5-10 rank stages. Each time such a rank upgrade is awarded, a predefined private message can be shared. While these are programmed, the platform will display you as their sender. Coaching them "personally" on their level of engagement will prove to be very effective. Refine your copy as you go along, depending on the responses that you will receive. You might make some new friends while you’re at it!

Trick 3: Onboard with a twist

Your customers might feel uncertain or overwhelmed when first entering your community. So, you should provide them with the warm welcome they deserve. You can configure a rank granted in the first few minutes after registration. With it, a short notification message can pop up in the bottom right of their screen. This will grab their attention and surprise them with a pleasant word of welcome. Nudges like these will acknowledge their presence and motivate them to commit more effort to the community.

Trick 4: Secret spy rank

As with the philanthropist rank, you can get various insights from clever ranks configuration. Let's reverse by looking for actively posting members which aren't much rewarded by others. Say you have a certain rank set at 100 replies and 50 likes. You could create a spy rank which is labeled and shown exactly the same as the normal one. Set it to 100 replies and zero likes instead, and assign a custom role as your canary. Now you can weed out suspicious folks who might have alternative agendas, or can use some guidance.

Trick 5: Thank the philanthropists

It’s easy to celebrate the contribution of your active users. Yet, there will always be users that might appear to be less visible, but who are valuable nonetheless. Your community might be blessed with a certain number of philanthropists. These are people who promote your best content, without getting anything for it in return. Measure this by setting up a rank, which gets triggered after a high number of likes given. The other requirements, such as replies posted, can be kept at a low or zero figure. Now, your own Mother Teresa’s will emerge from the shade, blessed with a new, complimentary rank!
