Our search engine automatically finds community content that's relevant to any given page on your website. To perform this search query, the widgets extract text from the page title (which typically contains an accurate/concise description of the page's content). However, the page title also probably contains words that may have a negative impact on the search results - for instance, your company's name, or words like 'help', 'buy', and 'service'.

In Control, you can define words to exclude from search queries in order to boost the relevance of the search results in the widgets.

How To Optimise The Automatic Topic Suggestions In The Embeddable Widgets

  1. Go to Control Integrations  EMBEDDABLE WIDGET Setup.
  2. If you haven’t already, add the domains on which you want to install the widgets to ‘Your Trusted Domains’.
    1. Add * to trusted domains to embed the widget on any domain
  3. In the ‘Words to exclude from search queries’ field, enter words that appear in the titles of your pages which you'd like to exclude from the automatic search (separate each word with a space).
  4. In the Exclude old content field, provide a numeric value to hide old and outdated content.
  5. Press ‘Save changes’, and you’re done.

Click below to check out a groovy example:

Let’s say you've got the following pages on your website,
https://www.groovyrecords.com(disclaimer: this website is not real):

Here's how the setup would look like for these pages:

  • Trusted domains: groovyrecords.com
  • Words to exclude from search queries: Groovy Records Help and FAQ

And here's how our search engine will process this configuration:

  • Input (page title): ‘Help - Groovy record player not working | Groovy Records Help and FAQ’
  • Output (final search query): ‘record player not working’

Note: The 'words to exclude from search queries' field is optional, but we strongly recommend using it if your website’s page titles contain generic text that could negatively impact the results shown in the widgets.

The ‘Exclude old content’ field is optional. Content exclusion is based on the recent engagement in the topic: if a topic was started, or received a new comment, outside the date range it will not be shown in the embeddable widgets.

Extra info about how we process the 'words to exclude from search queries' field: it's case insensitive (capital letters don't affect the results), we ignore practically all punctuation, and there's a 255 character limit on the field.

Tip: You can also disable automatic topic suggestions in the widgets on specific pages, as well as pin topics you think are most appropriate for a given page.
