In this article, you will learn how to add, edit and delete community categories. Being intentional about how you organize content will help users navigate your platform, find relevant topics, and increase engagement. Content is organized by parent categories, which are then broken down into subcategories. There can be a variety of topics posted by users or employees within the subcategories. Some moderators will spend a lot of time moving topics to the appropriate categories. Refer to the image below:

Get Started:

  • Login to the moderation environment (e.g. companyname.insided.com)
  • Go to Platform > Community

Parent categories:

  • A new parent category can be added by clicking on the ‘Add category’ button  in the upper right corner.
  • Title: self explanatory. 😜
  • Description: appears on the parent category page, under the title.
  • Description check box: Some homepage widgets will list the parent categories. You can list the titles with or without a description.
  • Hero Image: Displays on the top of a parent category page, similar to a page banner.
  • Thumbnail image: Displays as a small thumbnail on the homepage.

Categories:

  • A new category can be added by clicking on the ‘Add category’ in the center, under parent category.

  • Toggle activity rankings: Maybe you would not like the “off topic” area to be counted in the ranking system.
  • Type: Different category types have different function, listed below:

Curated Content:

  • Curated list: the Webster definition of curation is to carefully choose and organize. If you show a curated list of topics, they will show at the top of the category page.
  • Community list: Not all topics can be special. 🤷🏻‍♀️ All other topics will show below the curated list.
  • Title: What do you want to call your curated list? We named ours “Recommendations” .
  • Topics: carefully choose and organize the topics you’d like to be curated

Permissions:

Organization:

  • Organize categories as you want them to appear on the font end
  • Drag and drop to organize

Deleting:

  • A parent category can not be delete if there are subcategories within it; therefore, you must delete or move the sub-categories.
  • a Sub-category can not be deleted if there are topics within it; therefore, you must delete or move the topics.
  • To delete a category, click on edit > delete next to the category name.

Hi,

How can we change a subcategory from one category to an other ?

Thanks,

Manon
Hi Manon,

Its not currently possible to do this, you can only re-arrange categories underneath the parent category. You can't drag a category to a different parent category, but be sure to upvote this idea if you would like us to build this functionality!

@Manon Fain You cannot do this yourself at the moment. But if you ask inSided (and maybe bribe them with cookies 😉 ) then they can do it for you easily.

is it possible to add another community category (not parent category) to the Nav Component?
